Up $10,000 One Day – Down the Next: The Reality of Volatile Investing

Some days my portfolio grows by more than $10,000.
Other days it drops just as much.
That’s the reality of investing – learning to ride the ups and downs.
Markets rise, markets fall. The key is figuring out how to move with the waves instead of letting them overwhelm you.
- Example: On Friday, my portfolio was down $1,411.
- Today, it’s up $3,618.
Reducing Risk When Life Gets Full
Earlier this year, I decided to reduce risk in my portfolio.
Life was already full. Constantly watching my investments rise and fall started to feel like extra stress. Checking my portfolio too often didn’t help either.
So I shifted much of my money into lower-risk index funds.
I kept a portion in AI stocks because I still believed in the growth potential.
My goal was simple: reduce stress and let my money grow steadily in the background.
Finding Your Investing Style
After a while, I realized low-risk investing isn’t my natural style.
I enjoy researching companies, following trends, and making active investment decisions.
So when global tensions rose again – particularly around Iran – I decided to re-evaluate my strategy.
Instead of avoiding volatility, I leaned into areas that could benefit from it:
- Reduced some index fund positions (kept a portion to balance risk)
- Increased exposure to technology, AI, and energy sectors
- Added an energy ETF to capitalize on geopolitical-driven price increases
Yes, this approach comes with more volatility, but it can also create opportunities if you can handle the swings.
Real-Life Impacts
Global conflicts don’t just affect stock markets – they affect real people and real lives.
- Rising gas prices
- Increased costs of living
- Economic uncertainty
- Stress about the future
For people living paycheque to paycheque, even a small cost increase can be overwhelming. These challenges deserve empathy and understanding.
Shift Your Perspective
When you can’t control a situation, the most powerful thing you can do is shift your mindset.
Instead of stressing about things outside your control, ask yourself:
“What can I do to make this situation easier for myself?”
- Adjust your investments
- Revisit your budget
- Find creative ways to manage rising costs
Being a problem solver instead of a worrier is empowering.
Mindset Matters
Life will always throw financial, emotional, and global challenges at us.
But challenges can also be opportunities for growth if you face them with resilience.
Think of it like leveling up in a game: the challenges get harder, but so do you.
- Take a deep breath
- Remind yourself you can adapt, learn, and find solutions
- Look at tough situations as challenges to rise to
Embrace your inner boss. Keep learning, adjusting, and moving forward.
You’ve got this.
And when you look back, you’ll realize these moments helped make you stronger, smarter, and more resilient.
